Solid Mahogany Furniture. |
Over 400 years ago Dutch settlers brought along with some of their culture, traditions and wood seedlings from Honduras to Indonesia and grew Mahogany trees along road sides. The Dutch recognized Mahogany as an ideal hardwood for building furniture. Only later Indonesians started using the mahogany for wood carving, furniture and still remain to date a remarkable art form.
The Indonesian government controls and regulates all wood cutting. Each tree removed for the creation of hand-carved furniture is accounted for and cross-referenced against finished merchandise exported abroad. Indonesia grown mahogany is plantation grown, one of the largest is located in Madiun, East Java. Once the mature trees are harvested, the fields are re-seeded to maintain a healthy reforestation.
Mahogany wood is a richly coloured material that is among the more valuable wood species in the world. It is known for its unique pink colouring, which develops into a deep reddish-brown as the wood ages. Unlike alternative wood products such as oak or pine, mahogany wood features very few knots or voids. This gives the wood a smooth, even grain pattern, which makes it ideal for fine furnishings and wood craft. The trees are planted, harvested and replanted to ensure the continuation of this sustainable resource. The young Mahogany wood is light but if it is stained and polished will become a beautiful reddish brown. The same occurs with age. The wood can be used for several applications because of its strength and density. It has a straight grain, and a fine, even texture which accepts many kinds of stains.
Most species of trees that produce mahogany wood grows quite large which enables tree harvesters to produce large, continuous boards. Using these large boards, furniture makers can create desks, tables, and other furnishings without seams or joints. Mahogany is also relatively easy to work with. It is incredibly strong and durable, allowing craftsmen to create long-lasting products. Compared to other materials, mahogany is easier to sand, cut cleanly, or turn.
Mahogany wood comes from the Swietenia genus of trees. There are three major types of tree in this genus that mahogany wood can be derived from. The rarest and most valuable is the Swietenia mahagoni, which is grown throughout Florida, Honduras, and the Caribbean. The Swietenia humilus and Swietenia macrophylla are grown on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of South America, respectively. The mahogany furnishings you will be purchasing from us are from the species Swietenia Macrophylla is plantation grown in Indonesia.
Daily Care of Mahogany Furniture.
Avoid placing mahogany furniture in direct sun light and near radiators as this could cause the wood to dry out which may lead to splitting.
Keeping mahogany clean on a regular basis is the simplest and most effective way to prevent colour fade. Finished surfaces need only a duster to keep the surface free of dust, use a slightly moist cloth to remove greasy finger marks. Bees wax cleaning occasionally will remove corrosive substance from building on the surface and will maintain an attractive natural shine of the wood. Use bees wax directly on to the duster not the furniture and avoid using silicone based polishes.
